What is your friends end goal? To learn AIX, or to do something cool?

If he is trying to learn AIX what he will want is a version of AIX 5.x and it may or may not run on the old hardware. If you let me know the hardware he is trying to run on I can let you know what versions of AIX should run on it. The hardware should be identified by a number like 7128-43p, i.e. nnnn-yyy.

As far as Linux is concerned Yellow Dog has probably the best support for legacy IBM hardware out there.

Keep in mind most of these old boxes are MCA (Micro Chanel) not PCI based so more modern distributions may not support it either.

All in all sounds like a fun project.

CJP

Caleb Cushing <xenoterracide@gmail.com> wrote:
he wouldn't have a problem upgrading He was thinking of trying to make it run linux, but
he thinks the hardware is to old. which may be true.

On 3/15/06, Christian J.
