my innitial problem seemed to be with a version incompatablility. howerver rsnapshot is telling me that I cannot create a snapshot root on another machine? I don't really want to create the backup on this machine? it takes too much space. You should be able to find docs on it. You should be able to use rsnapshot even for the original one. Are you current;y backing up from host to host? It looks like you are trying to rotate. You would use the rsync command, not the cp command.
