<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01 Transitional//EN"> <html> <head> <meta content="text/html;charset=ISO-8859-1" http-equiv="Content-Type"> <title></title> </head> <body bgcolor="#ffffff" text="#000000"> Karl,     To clarify, although the splash screen is never displayed, in all cases of trying some version of Ubuntu the machine goes directly to booting the LiveCD and, therefore, does not show me an option for installation of the operating system.     So it's not a problem of getting past the splash screen, it's a problem of never seeing it at all.  The execution goes directly to booting the LiveCD.     I've discovered that I can get to a screen which provides a menu that includes Install using Ubuntu 9.10, but it's NOT the splash screen that I expect to see.  And, since this system has so little memory (256Mb at the moment), 9.10 doesn't get anywhere.     I have a version of BSD that does bring up a splash screen, but I'm not interested in installing BSD at this time.     All other attempts behave as in line 1 & 2 above.     Anybody have any other ideas?
