No need to even point most browsers to it, unless you want browsers to ignore the cache by default. If you create a ".pac" file (special JavaScript based format) and serve it via <a href="http://wpad/wpad.dat">http://wpad/wpad.dat</a>, the major browsers will pick it up on their own.<br>

I did this for awhile a few years back. It's relatively easy to set<br>
up, just configure Squid to be a caching proxy and point your web<br>
browsers at it. It's possible to set up a transparent proxy, but I<br>
don't recommend this since you'll probably run into that one weird<br>
device that won't work right with it. The only reason I stopped using<br>
Squid for caching was because all of my desktop hard drives were<br>
faster than the server which was doing the caching.<br>
