<div>I've used WebMatrix with WordPress in this exact kind of situation, though it's not as easy as I'd like it to be. If they really want to go that route, <a href="http://codex.wordpress.org/Moving_WordPress">this resource will be helpful</a>. However, I would strongly urge your friend to sign up with <a href="http://bluehost.com">Bluehost</a> and just do development from there. Bluehost has a script that sets up a new WordPress site for you, you can work on your site before you transfer your domain if you need to, and the process of making your site live is a lot less complicated than uploading it through WebMatrix.</div>
<div><br></div><div>For calendar integration, I personally really like the <a href="http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/ajax-event-calendar/">Ajax Event Calendar</a> plugin for WordPress, combined with <a href="http://www.eventbrite.com">Eventbrite</a> for people to register (if you need that capability). You can see an example of that implemented on <a href="http://www.midmichiganspartans.com/club-events/">the MSU Alumni Club of Mid-Michigan's website</a>.</div>
