I wanted the same thing a few years back. I found a couple of
different kinds of USB to 9 pin serial converters in the discount
bins at stores like Office Maxx for around $10 each. I had to get a
couple of different kinds (Belkin and Keyspan). They both work out
of the box on Linux and they both behave just like any serial port
that I have used. <br>

I don't know about parallel ports though. <br>
