Ddwrt is a proprietary fork of openwrt, which supports a bit more stuff. I personally recommend Openwrt. For hardware up to about >16mbps over nat, the wrt54gl is great. If you run lean, you can push into the mid 20s, but I recommend a faster device for general use at that point. I had just added a low end 300mbps 802.11n ap to it for another $15.
