<div dir="ltr"><div><div>In addition to what everyone else has said, nothing you've revealed thus far is particularly novel. That item in particular is discussed a lot, and I'd be amazed if there weren't at least dozens of such applications available. In fact, for my HCI class this term, that was one of the ideas mentioned, and then struck down as a potential project for us. You might have something novel, but given the area you indicated, my guess would be no.<br><br></div>If I were you, I would register the domain name and/or trademark if you can afford it, disclose everything that wouldn't be considered a trade secret or otherwise privileged information for any such hypothetical employees under NDA, and get your estimates from there. That will at least get you a lower bound (though I say figure a minimum 3X the estimated hours, if not 5X for any hourly bids. If you don't know how to write a formal requirements document, you may need to hire someone to help you with that, too. If you can't communicate what you want to your architect, he may create a beautiful, elegant system that does something completely other than what you intended. Use this to determine if it's even worth looking into an NDA, etc. for your trade secret to pursue further.<br><br><br></div><div>By the way, make sure you read any software licenses carefully and consult a lawyer if needed. Things like the AGPL are specifically intended to keep people from extending source code to make proprietary web systems and then keep that code from the community. Licenses would also need to be factored into any estimates with your architect.<br></div></div><div class="gmail_extra"><br><div class="gmail_quote">On Mon, Feb 2, 2015 at 3:04 PM, Peter Christenson <span dir="ltr"><<a href="mailto:pac1.mi@gmail.com" target="_blank">pac1.mi@gmail.com</a>></span> wrote:<br><blockquote class="gmail_quote" style="margin:0 0 0 .8ex;border-left:1px #ccc solid;padding-left:1ex"><div dir="ltr">Hi Patrick and Chick, Thanks for the fast response.<div><div>Although I'm very excited about sharing my idea in detail with anyone and everyone, Chick hit the nail on the head, I don't know how much should be shared at this time. </div><div><div>however I will share that it is a meal planning and shopping list tool that would be available via browser as well as mobile app and maybe even a desktop app. with the goal of helping the end users, without adding more complexity to their lives.</div></div><div><br></div><div>because I haven't done this before I'm unsure what steps need to be taken, and in what order. what I do know is, what I want it to do, how it should look and act, and that I can't get it there by myself.<br></div></div><div>I don't know if that helps or not but that is where I'm at :)<br></div><div><br></div><div>Thank you for your time and help on this.</div><span class="HOEnZb"><font color="#888888"><div>Peter</div></font></span></div><div class="HOEnZb"><div class="h5"><div class="gmail_extra"><br><div class="gmail_quote">On Mon, Feb 2, 2015 at 1:43 PM, Patrick Goupell <span dir="ltr"><<a href="mailto:patrick@upmerchants.com" target="_blank">patrick@upmerchants.com</a>></span> wrote:<br><blockquote class="gmail_quote" style="margin:0 0 0 .8ex;border-left:1px #ccc solid;padding-left:1ex">

<div dir="ltr">Hi all,
<div>Over the weekend I had a fantastic Idea for a new
website/app.</div>
<div>I know that its going to require hosting, management and
the like, and I plan on using as much Foss and Linuxy goodness
as possible, but before I can do most of that, it needs to be
developed and I'm not a developer :( and that has me stuck
spinning my wheels. </div>
<div>So I figured I would see if anyone here can give pointers
on how to go about moving forward from here. </div>
<div>I'm open to any suggestions, recommendations, or shameless
plugs :)</div>

</div>
<div>I just don't want to see a good Idea be die off before I
get the skills to do it myself.... because that might take a
few years.</div>

<div>Thanks</div>
