Dear all,
I am finding out whether one can apply shear stress (parallel) to the =

pressure to the surface (perpendicular to the surface). I will be very =
greatful if someone can response to my question. Thanks

Subject: [abaqus-user] Problem with Contact Modeling!
Message-ID: <200208241732.g7OHW01t027623@egr.msu.edu>
Hello all,
I am doing contact analysis for tube hydroforming using S4 shell
elements. Following are the number values for my die radius, tube mid-
surface radius and thickness :
a. DIE RADIUS = 25.476 mm
b. Tube MID-SURFACE radius = 24.765 mm
c. Thickness = 1.24 mm
My problem is, when I use Abaqus/Standard (Implicit Analysis), at the
end, the mid-surface of the tube is touching the die instead of the
external surface. That implies the tube has penetrated the die by 0.62 mm
(i.e. half the thickness). When I do a similar analysis in
Abaqus/Explicit using SAX1 elements (instead of S4 shell elements), this
problem isn't there and the expansion is such that the external surface
is touching the die (instead of mid-surface).
My guess is I need to ask Abaqus/Standard to take into account the
thickness of the tube which is being ignored presently.
Please advise.
Thanx
Narasimhan.

Subject: [abaqus-user] Some ABAQUS Questions
Message-ID:
Mr. Hall,
Sir, I just had a few questions regarding some ABAQUS problems I
have been experiencing lately. I have copied this to the ABAQUS users
list because I know I am not the only person to run into these problems so
maybe we can prevent multiple requests for the same problems as the ABAQUS
use ramps up this term. Just for general information I have been using
only ABAQUS version 6.2 but I suspect the first couple of problems would
be applicable to both versions 6.2 and 5.8.
First off, I have been experiencing difficulty using both ABAQUS viewer
and CAE on the new Unix systems in room 1328 and 2200. I am not sure what
the problem is but I am unable to use viewer if I remote login to a
different server (i.e. type ssh spender at prompt) and try to look at my
results. If they are on a server that is unavailable through the network
(such as a local server used by our research team) then I am unable to
view the results without transferring the files to my home directory or to
a temporary drive on the host computer I am working at.
Secondly, when I am able to open CAE and view the results the screen does
not seem to ever refresh without either minimizing or maximizing the
screen. For example, when I try to rotate a part the outline will appear
to be rotated but the part will not show up until I have minimized and
reset the screen. As you can imagine this can sometimes be rather
frustrating since it occurs when trying to change the view, change the
sizing, when changing the shading of the elements, etc. So my main
question is, is this a compatibility problem between ABAQUS 6.2 and the
new Unix version or is it something that can be fixed easily through some
changes in my environmental settings? If it is a compatibility problem
will there be Unix systems left around the Engineering building and
throughout the RCE that can be used to run ABAQUS Viewer/CAE?
My final problem that I have been running into lately is that sometimes
when I am running an ABAQUS job the solver will quit. I check the .log
file and it says "...error occurred, see status file for errors..." or
something to that effect. When I go to the status file to see what error
occurred the file will either be blank or will have no errors listed.
Obviously this leaves me at a significant disadvantage for trying to debug
the problem. I spend a fair amount of time trying to guess what the
problem may be, sometimes to no avail. Anyways, I was just wondering is
this a problem with the installation? due to the fact that in version 6.2
the write command in our Fortran subroutines will cause problems?
something else?
Okay, I think that's it for now. I would really appreciate any helpful
tips or ideas anyone may have in regard to these problems. Thanks in
advance for your help.

Hi Mike,
Regarding the third problem, with status file not reporting your
errors, my 2-cent opinion is that if you run your analysis interactively,
part of the message appearing on screen is the status file part they are
refering to. Try run it on the background, then take a look at your status
file to see whether this is true.
Also, since Abaqus 6.2 doesn't support the WRITE and PRINT statements,
it is very hard to debug if you have some user-subroutines. Check your
.msg file. If you are using user-subroutine and .msg file doesn't complete
(like truncated without a summary of errors/warnings) found, then the
problem may be your user-subroutine.

Thanks, Kok, for your response.
Mike, to debug this problem with the workstations in 1328 and 2200, do
any of the machines are RCE, larry, moe or curly, have the same problem
or do they work ok? They are still running Solaris 8 as opposed to
Solaris 9 here.
