Friends of Sociolinguistics,

These workshops look great for students and faculty who are engaged in
analysis of language variation and change, especially (but definitely not
only) those of you working with text corpora. I can also highly recommend
the library staff running the workshops: I've been to sessions led by them
before, and they're all excellent.

Grad students: these are skills that are in demand both inside and outside
of academia.

Note that the first workshop is THIS Wednesday, Jan 20th.

All best,
Suzanne

Dear colleagues,

We are delighted to present three Digital Humanities workshops during
Spring 2016. In addition to the three workshops detailed below, our events
calendar at digitalhumanities.msu.edu/events includes workshops and
activities put on by other units on campus that may be of interest to the
MSU Digital Humanities community.

Please remember that ALL - students, staff, faculty, etc - are welcome to
attend these workshops. We would appreciate it if you would pass along this
information to interested students and colleagues. A pdf flyer is attached
that you are encouraged to post wherever it may be useful.

   - *January 20, 3:00-5:00, Github and Git for Humanists*

   - REAL Instruction Classroom, 3W, Main Library
      - Taught by: Thomas Padilla and Megan Kudzia
      - Curious about Github and Git? Want to learn how to use them to
manage data, code, digital projects, and collaborative document editing?
During this workshop we will provide a low barrier introduction to Github
and Git that will show you their potential value and offer some hands on
      experimentation.
      - Registration: http://classes.lib.msu.edu/view_class.php?class_id=153

   - *February 10, 3:00-5:00, Interactive Data Visualization with R*

   - REAL Instruction Classroom, 3W, Main Library
      - Taught by: Thomas Padilla
      - Are you interested in data visualization? Are you interested in
making your data visualizations interactive and shareable on the web? If
the answer to both is yes, this is the workshop for you. During the
workshop you will be introduced to the R programming language and use it to
make web based interactive data visualizations.
      - Registration: http://classes.lib.msu.edu/view_class.php?class_id=151

   - *March 23, 3:00-5:00, Text Analysis with Natural Language Toolkit*

   - LEADR, Room 112, Old Horticulture
      - Taught by: Devin Higgins and Kristen Mapes
      - This workshop will provide an introduction to using Python
programming and the Natural Language Toolkit (NLTK) to prepare and analyze
text. The workshop will introduce Python data types, and provide an
overview of NLTK text analysis tools. No prior programming experience
      required.
      - Registration: http://classes.lib.msu.edu/view_class.php?class_id=111

Please get in touch with me if you have any questions. We look forward to
