Good afternoon,

Welcome back from winter break! We hope everyone is having a good first
week back. This is a reminder that a week from today, *next Thursday,
January 21st*, we will be having our first colloquium of the semester. Our
speaker is Professor Karen Miller from Pennsylvania State University, whose
talk is titled "Acquisition of Variation" (abstract below).

Additionally, if you have received the College of Arts and Letters, they
mistakenly announced Professor Maya Ravindranath's talk as occurring again
tomorrow. This is in error and there is no talk tomorrow evening. The
College of Arts and Letters newsletter staff have sent us this message for
anyone who may be confused:

> Hello,
> In the last News & Events email sent out by CAL there was a listing on
> Friday Jan, 15 for Maya Ravindranath's colloquium talk, which occurred in
> December. We apologize for this inadvertent posting, and the linguistics
> department is not having an event on Friday. Thank you for your
> understanding.

you all next week! As always, please do not hesitate to no hesitate to

Acquisition of Variation
Karen Miller {Pennsylvania State University}

Studies that investigate language acquisition in contexts of variable input
may provide a new way of informing models of language acquisition. In this
talk, I will discuss language acquisition in the context of different input
types (e.g. categorical input, variable input, inconsistent input) and
present a series of studies that examine child language acquisition in
contexts of variable input. While studies in this area are relatively rare,
and the results I present are preliminary, I hope the presentation will
generate discussion about how we might represent the initial state of the
learner and the process of language acquisition more generally.
