FOS and other sociolinguistics people,

I'm looking for some additional volunteers (students or faculty) for *Harry
Potter and the Secrets of British English* next week, Wednesday June 28th.
This is a low-friction, quick way of adding some outreach experience to
your resumé, and it's also a really fun time for everyone.

*When* *and where: *Wednesday June 28th in B-117 Wells Hall. Session 1 is
9:00am - 10:30am. Session 2 is 2:00pm - 3:30pm. That's right: I need a
minimum of 90 minutes of your time! Come to one or both sessions.

*Participants: *8-12 year olds and their grandparents (50 total per
session) as part of MSU Grandparents University
<https://www.grandparents.msu.edu/>.

*Volunteers: *Any student or faculty member with an interest in bringing
the study of language to a wider audience. *No knowledge of Harry Potter or
linguistics required,* although both are helpful.

*What we do: *Participants are 'sorted' into Houses, given wacky names, and
complete 3 activities that highlight dialect differences and give
participants an opportunity to use the International Phonetic Alphabet.

*What we eat and drink: *Coffee for the grown-ups; British cookies and
Bertie Bott's Every Flavor Beans for everyone.

The session has been one of the most popular on offer at Grandparents
University for the last three years. Come along and help us keep up that
reputation!

If you or someone you know is interested, please drop me a line:

(Apologies to everyone on both the FOS and Socio Lab lists for the
duplication.)

Suzanne
