Dear all,

If you or a graduate student you know is working with social media data or other websites, you might be interested in these lunches. Conversation will include the ethics of using these kinds of material for research.

There's a link for you to sign up in the message below. If you go, keep a note that you attended, as this can potentially be added to your Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR) record in GradPlan.

Please contact Dr. Johanna Schuster-Craig (schust66 at msu.edu) directly if you have any questions.

Best,

Suzanne

The German program is hosting two research methods lunches for graduate students this month as we bring in two scholars who work on digital circulation of far right discourse, politics, and clothing/consumerism. If you have students who might be interested, both guests will meet with students to discuss their work outside of the context of their invited talks, which are later that afternoon. Feel free to let me know if you have any questions.

Lunch, Karin Liebhart, Oct. 11, Room B-443 Wells Hall, 12-1pm

Karin Liebhart studies how Austrian far-right movements communicate on Instagram and Twitter.

Lunch, Cynthia Miller-Idriss, Oct. 29 , 12-1pm, Wells Hall, Room B-243

Cynthia Miller-Idriss has compiled a database of far-right clothing brands through the help of professional journalistic photographers and store websites selling such brands;

The lunches are a chance to talk with these scholars about how they gathered and analyzed their data sets, especially for folks interested in DH, visuality or the far-right – as well as the ethical questions of grabbing social media posts or photographing protestors. Please use this G:Drive link to sign up for lunch: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1LBuF6Te61Niae3HgyfT-wHpe9ic5vzv4qRYBGwVW4y0/edit

On these SAME dates, both guests will be giving a talk starting at 3pm in room 303 of the International Center. If you have any questions, please let me know. If you know other grad students outside the program who would like to participate, please forward this link.

All best,

Johanna
