LIN 225 Language and Gender
ONLINE, Summer I
How do individuals construct, perform and/or reflect their gender expression through their language? By what means (pronunciation, vocabulary, conversational style etc) does this happen? How does society create norms and expectations for gendered language behavior, and how do these change across time? How do those norms differ across Western and non-Western societies? What about across face-to-face, online and AI (e.g. Amazon Alexa) contexts? In this fully online introductory course, we will consider how the linguistic construction of gender intersects with other aspects of social identity, such as ethnicity, social class and age. No prior knowledge of linguistics or social/cultural theory is assumed or required. This course will enhance your social science literacy, while also engaging you from a humanities perspective with issues such as personal agency and societal change.
