<span style="font-size:12.0pt; line-height:106%; font-family:"Garamond",serif">Does research about language serve social justice ends? Can it? These questions have become increasingly relevant for scholars all over the world who have been watching justice movements
begin and grow in response to crises related to genocide, climate, healthcare, policing, land usage, democratic representation, and other things. There is growing awareness among scholars of language that conversations about research methodology are central
to conducting scholarship in solidarity with justice movements, but much of this work has focused on predominantly qualitative methodologies such as critical discourse analysis or ethnography (e.g., Warriner & Bigelow, 2019). In this talk, I build on a previous
presentation about quantitative research and struggles for justice (YouTube video available here:

to discuss how corpus linguistics, as one type of quantitative or mixed methodology, can be a useful element in a larger justice-oriented research agenda. I argue that, in order to maximize the justice potential of the methodology, corpus linguists must approach
their scholarship with its justice implications in mind. In this talk, I present three principles for using corpus linguistics in solidarity with struggles for justice. First, corpus linguists should challenge and reject dominant epistemologies that assert,
among other things, that research should be neutral, objective, or apolitical. Second, they should learn to connect the quantities dealt with in corpus linguistics to socially salient understandings of injustice or inequity. Finally, corpus linguists must
move beyond a conception of their work as purely and simply concerned with the corpus to understand that the textual data they have collected is made most relevant when put in conversation with other forms of data and scholarship. </span></p>
