My suggestion is this.  I've always had good results with this
method[1], but YMMV of course.

	1. Switch back to 24- or 32-bit color mode.
	2. Run xwd, dump your window.
	3. Fire up GIMP, load window dump.
	4. Select Image | Indexed from the GIMP menu, *deselect*
           Floyd-Steinberg dithering, and tell it to go.

[1] I once had to do a metric buttload of screen caps for a
course I was helping with.
