   Ok, I gave up quickly on rarp and arp. Trying to get to the printer via bootp.

   Well its a HP with jetdirect. The manual says by default the thing
has IP 192.0.0.192 and it should be telnet capable under that IP 2 min
after turning on. Of course ping or telnetting it doesn't work.

   Ok I set up /etc/bootptab

   mail:~ # cat /etc/bootptab
   smurf.montiehouse.com: \
      sm=255.255.255.0: \
      gw=192.168.1.1: \
      ht=ethernet: \
      ha=0060B0053740: \
      ip=192.168.1.100:

   I set up /etc/inetd.conf:

   # Tftp service is provided primarily for booting. Most sites
   # run this only on machines acting as "boot servers."
   #
   tftp dgram udp wait nobody /usr/sbin/tcpd in.tftpd /tftpboot
   bootps dgram udp wait root /usr/sbin/bootpd bootpd

   I rebooted server and then turned on the printer and nothing happens.

   Any help?

I deprecated bootpd in favor of dhcpd, which will handle both
protocols. However, our entries looked like this:

smurf.montiehouse.com:\
        :sm=255.255.255.0:\
        :gw=192.168.1.1:\
        :hd=/usr/boot:\
        :bf=null:\
        :ht=ether:\
        :ha=0060B0053740:\
        :hn:\
        :ip=192.168.1.100:\
        :vm=rfc1048:

I don't remember if all are necessary, but indentations *must* be
tabs. bootp won't complain, it will just ignore the entry! It is best
to use vi for editing this file.

Also, print a test page a make sure you have BOOTP enabled.
