For some reason, if I drop the PPP speed from 115200 to 57600, 
it works.  I just kept it at 115200 and on the old motherboard, 
it worked fine.  Perhaps there is something funky about the 
UART interface on this new board.

Andrew Keen:  It's a Gigabyte GA-5AX (rev 5.x), and I am 
plugging the modem cable right into the ATX serial slot in 
the back (no header cables or anything).
