These days the keymaps seem to be stored in /usr/share/keymaps,
but the historical Linux location is /usr/lib/kbd.  (How do I
remember all this crap?  And *why*?)

Personally I use a custom keymap optimized for Emacs.  Drives me
nuts when I go into X and everything's different.  Of course I
could learn how to fix XKB in the same way but life's only so
long and I don't use X much anyhow.
