In theory, they are backwards compatible.  I'm sure there are 
some cases where they are not though.  This does assume the same 
pin layout and voltage (I am unaware if the "older" DIMMs had 
some sort of auto-detection of voltage, I generally assume that 
most PCxx DIMM chips are 3.3 volt).  What may not be backwards 
compatable are the older DIMMs that are rated for 10 or 8ns but 
are not PCxx.

I thought PC100 was backward compatible with PC66(?) You just don't get
the speed boost by putting 100 in a 66 slot. 

The motherboard would determine between the older 5v Dimms and the 3.3v
dimms. The PCXXX series doesnt have the autodetection for the correct
voltage on the DIMM which the "older" DIMMS did.
