CD-Burner Problems

I have been trying to get my IDE cd burnner to work
with no sucess.  I am running a standard gnome
workstation install of Redhat 6.2.  I have installed
the latest version of cdrecord and the latest version
of xcdroast.  I have to recompile my kernel for
SCSI-IDE emulation and have no idea of how to go about
this.
