Yeah, the 2.2.x VM isn't too stable.  If you go into swap, you
can break things.  This is being fixed, hopefully, for 2.4.x;
2.0.x also has a more solid VM.  (Alan Cox has commented on this
in the linux-kernel mailing list.)
