(that one hasn't been updated in a while and doesn't take iptables into
account.  The basic concepts are still valid.)
http://freshmeat.net/ and search for "GUI Firewall" to find a set of tools for
ipchains (mostly) that may make things easier for the novice.

The average home user can get by with making sure that no unnecessary services
are running (probably don't need sendmail or ircd or nfsd) and using sshd
instead of telnetd.  Blocking port 139 at the firewall is a good idea though
if you're running Samba internally.
