smc switch

An internal power supply means that the AC to DC transformer is contained
inside the switch. These type of devices will typically use a standard
3-prong computer power cable. An external power supply means that the
switch will require a clunky wall-wart transformer, and probably use a thin
DC power cable that plugs into a little jack on the switch.
