Make sure the client libraries are configured to use localhost (the setting
is in, I believe, etc/ldap.conf -- or at least something similar) and also
make sure slapd is running.  My install is rooted in /usr/local/ so in my
case I had to modify /usr/local/etc/ldap.conf and start
/usr/local/libexec/slapd (after modifying my slapd.conf as well, of course).

6, however, when i try to add to the directory using the ldapadd command, i 
get the following error: ldap_bind: cant contact LDAP server...
