Gentlemen:

Thank you very much for your advice on my internet server project. To
answer some of your questions: I just got the 486 as salvage from my
employer and I had only booted it up to make sure it worked (it did - had
MS-DOS 6.0 installed). A closer examination revealed the mb is VLB,
meaning the PCI NIC I wanted to use is not an option. It has some kind of
Novell card in it, but I want to use the PCI NIC due to faster speed
(10/100). Also it has a combination video and I/O card with only one IDE
port and I didn't want to put a CD-ROM on the same port as a HD. So, I
plan to get a PCI mb to use with the current processor (486dx2-66) and
8meg of ram. I, obviously, won't be able to get this all done by your
meeting on Sunday, but hope to be able to bring the machine to the
February meeting. I will further research the various alternatives, but
right now I'm leaning toward freesco, as it will apparently fit on the
120meg HD in the 486. Another option is putting in a 1 gig Quantum drive
I have available, if more space is needed. Thanks again - any further
suggestions will be appreciated.
