"hooking up dumb terminals for dummies"

I tried hooking it up with the cable I mentioned earlier. 
I added the following line to my /etc/inittab file:
s1:2345:respawn:/sbin/getty ttys01 DT38400 vt102
I get an error message in the syslog
Id "s1" respawning too fast: disabled for 5 minutes.
Is there a more "detailed" way to see what is going
on? I really could use a gender changer <snicker>.
Anyone have one I could borrow?
