I've used Xine (xine.sourceforge.net) with great success...  It's plugin 
based and is -not- distributed with the plugin for encrypted DVDs though.  
There are several plugins for encrypted DVDs, and even a plugin that handles 
DVD Menus!

Still crashes more than DVD on Windows, and doesn't have all the features, 
but getting much better (actually usable).
