Hm.  At a guess, the default environment is typically different 
(minimal) when the system init scripts are being run.  You've got /bin, 
/usr/bin, /sbin, /usr/sbin, and that's about it.  I did a Google on 
"SQL Anywhere"+"startup" in comp.os.linux.* and didn't find anything.  
Nuts.

You could try putting "set -x" into rc.local right after the 
#!/bin/bash, that will make the script spew out a lot of extra 
debugging information (always handy).  Full documentation for the 
product is apparently only in the big free-download package, which I 
will attempt to grab a bit later on when I get off work.
