[GLLUG] Booting into text mode

Ctrl-Alt-1 will take you to another virtual terminal.
There are others besides 1.  On Redhat you may have 6 that work.  I
don't know, but 1 ought to do the trick.  If you want to switch to
another virtual terminal you can do Ctrl-Alt-#.

I can't help you with the garbled display.
