Hmm. I was going by http://www.winehq.com/about/, which claims Direct3D
isn't supported -
were they all running in software mode with their own graphics engines
perhaps? That wouldn't
require Direct3D, just the part of DirectX that gives you a framebuffer to
draw in. Alternatively,
of course, their webpage could just be hideously out of date.
