heh. woops. I didn't see it at first glance but it's there. I tried it
again
xinit /usr/bin/startkde -- :1 and it worked... however when I toggle
back from session to session (via ctrl+alt+F1 and F7) I lose my kde
session to text mode.  

one step forward and one step back. *sigh* any thoughts?
