If you run 2 X sessions, you can effectively switch between color
depths by hitting a few buttons instead of killing and restarting X.
This is less useful than it was previously, but a few years back there
were some applications that would barf unless they had an 8-bit X
display to run on.
Also, you can run another X session with a config file other than
/etc/X11/XF86Config , and get a lower-resolution desktop without the
newbie-confusing "virtual screen".
TANGENT: Is anyone here aware of real tech info on why that virtual
screen misfeature persists in modern implementations of X? People
complain about it all the time on c.o.l.misc. I assume it persists
because of old X applications that can't handle having the X-server
itself move/+resize windows, or the lack of a mechanism for the X
server to tell the clients, "screen resolution is now FOOxBAR, take
whatever action you see fit."
