I wondered about why it would be a misfeature too... I use
virutal screens every day all day. I almost always have
anywhere from 6-9 applications & terminals open at any given
time. It keeps them from being all piled on top of one
another like they would be on other expensive windowing OS's
which don't have that 'misfeature'. Besides, the number of
virtual screens can be set to one anyway if more gets in the
way.
