Ah ha, I have a Sony drive too.
Thanks, I read the man for tar - I didn't realize how easy it is to
compress the tar stream.

With the version of mt on my system the command is
`datcompression', not `compression'. But my Sony DDS-3 drive
refuses the command and you have to toggle a physical DIP switch
on the drive.
You're probably better off using gzip anyway.
