I think resolution is still stored as an Open Firmware variable. 
The easiest way to change that was to boot into MacOS and set the 
resolution. There is a utility to do it, but I don't recall the name of 
it offhand.  Xconfigurator maybe.. or i think you can set it at boot time 
with an append to the yaboot script.
