Thanks for the replies, very informative stuff. However, my question was about why the output looks different from the authors. I guess I assumed what was displayed in the tutorial was output from the ls -sl /usr/local directory, when it wasn't. The author was simply stating what he new to be true to make a point about inodes, not the ls command.
