[GLLUG] gnip (server monitoring program)

In my spare time (of which I've had plenty) recently, I've been working on
an idea I've had. At my previous job, we had a program which detected
machines down by pinging them. On a few separate occasions, it failed to
detect a machine down because, while the machine was crashed with a bad
hard drive or kernel panic, it was still responding to pings.

This program works by listening for pings, and announcing when a watched
machine goes too long without pinging, indicating a downed machine. The
theory is that while a crashed machine may still be able to reply to
pings, it won't be able to start a new program (such as ping).

Feel free to check this out, and offer suggestions and comments. I hope
this can be a useful program. Currently, it's only guarenteed to work
under Linux, but if it doesn't work under BSD, I'll fix that. (Alas, I
have no BSD machine here.)
