[GLLUG] New Video Card Advice

I personally like the Radeon series.  I have a RadeonVE, and 3D worked out of the box (er.. ISO) with Redhat 7.2.

I think for my next purchase I want to go with a R200[1] based card since you can get both open source and binary drivers [2].

I don't know about noise though.. 

1.  Explanation of naming scheme. http://dri.sourceforge.net/cgi-bin/moin.cgi/ATIRadeon  All Radeon's up to (and not including) R300 have open source drivers.  R200 and up have binary drivers from ATI.  http://www.crucial.com/store/partspecs.asp?imodule=CTV9100128A5&cat=Video%20Card ($75).

2.  I have been pretty happy with the open source drivers (I only play games occasionally though.. ), but you need the binary drivers because of a patent issue with s3tc texture compression, and sometimes games don't have options to turn it off.
