Also, FWIW, you can use Ctrl-Alt-BkSpace to cause XFree86 (and MetroX,
but who still runs MetroX, right?) to quit.  If it's controlled by a
display manager (xdm, gdm, kdm), it should respawn and, in so doing,
reread its config files.

    Try using CTR+ALT+F1 just before or at the time
the graphical system starts to load.  This should
bring up a console.  From there you can log in as root
and use redhat-config-xfree86 to reconfigure the
graphical system.
