I have used Mandrake, Red Hat, Suse, Debian, and have built systems from
source. Personally I prefer the latter for the flexibility and ease of
updating, for me anyway. For a complete newb I would have to say either
Mandrake or Suse. Someone considered a newb on the Windows side even I
would say Linspire (formerly Lindows) just for the similarities to
Windows, the lack of security not withstanding. Then there is the BSD
side of the Free *nix world. There I have used Free/Open/NetBSD and
strongly favor Open for the extreme amount of detail to security. For
the ease of use factor on the BSD side I would have to say Free for the
newb and Open for someone with a fairly good understanding of UNIX like
operating systems.
