[GLLUG] RE: Distro of Choice?

I am currently using SuSE 9.  I am satisfied with it, except for the way it handles executable files.  I have downloaded several free programs I would like to use.  However, when I try to install, I get a message that SuSE has detected it is an executable file and will not allow it to open.

I bought this to put on an old computer my son and I put together out of extra parts he had.  And I do not know enough about any OS to find a fix.  I looked in every part of SuSe I could get into and could find no way to override this.  So, I am waiting for Mandrake 10 to arrive in the mail and hopefully eliminate the problem that way.  

Anyone have any solutions (in layman's terms) that I could try?
