Make sure you compile in ext3 support into the kernel (Y not M). My guess
is that your /boot partition is ext3.
Kernel by default compiles ext3 as a module.

Subject: [GLLUG] compiling a new kernel
I decided to try my hand at compiling a new kernel. I didn't really change
much from the default configuration, but when I tried to boot it I get the
following:
"Uncompressing Linux.......Ok. Booting the kernel"
and then it just locks up. I put the old one back and it boots up just fine.
What might I be doing wrong?
Todd
