I used Comcast for a while in Albuquerque, so I have no idea how
different the service is here. I do remember that the upstream server
didn't care much what my MAC was, but the cable modem would memorize the
NIC's MAC after power-on (as in, from the factory) and only communicate
with that particular NIC thereafter. However, a hard reset (with the
help of a paper clip) was enough to make it talk to a different NIC. I
had to do this when I moved the modem to the outside of a firewall
instead of having it hooked up directly to my lone Windows machine. I
must say that I am impressed with cable modem technology, just not the
level of service that any of the vendors offer.
