Yes, RedHat is hanging up on you because you're trying to request a
"channel" that's been removed from RHN.  If you don't have one of the
RHE 2.1 or 3.0 distros (and a valid RHN login), ya gets no love.  They
were supposed to cut everyone off on 4/30, but decided not to because
there were a large number of outstanding patches to be released.
Nothing says ill will like leaving your soon-to-be-formerly-loyal users
hanging when the kernel needs patching.

Anyway, I guess Fedora's got something called 'yum' that's similar but
now package/compat tracking is done only locally..?
