[GLLUG] Meeting Minutes, 7 October 2004

Greetings fellow LUG members. If you didn't attend the meeting, here's
all the cool stuff that you missed.
Vital Statistics
----------------
14 people attended the meeting which started at 6:00PM and ended at
approximately 9:00PM.
Official Business
-----------------
Jeff asked again for a volunteer to fill the positions of Publicity
Director. We may have a treasurer, but we're waiting to hear back from
him. Step up, if you can, because we could really use your help in
deciding the feasibility of going non-profit.
We're also running dangerously low on upcoming presentations. Just think
of something you know well and tell us about it. Even beginners are
welcome to do presentations. Send a message to the list or to
asenchi at asenchi.com to let us know and we'll do our best to pencil you
in for a night that you'll be available.
Finally, we're also looking for volunteers to teach LPI sections. These
are really easy since we have the course material already. All you have
to do is go up in front of the class, follow the course material, and
field questions. Piece of cake!
Presentation
------------
Charles (that'd be me) gave a presentation on rdiff-backup and other
backup strategies and fielded a number of questions regarding backups,
mirroring and filesystems.
General Banter
--------------
There was discussion regarding the possibility of a group project to
build a digital video recorder using Linux and PC hardware. The idea
was that the group as a whole would do the research, decide on
hardware, and build the system. Those who wished to have their own PVR
would buy the same hardware as was used for the "prototype" and obtain
a copy of the prototype's hard disk image also. One person would
finance the prototype and then keep it after the project is over.

There also also discussion about various helpdesk request trackers.
Request Tracker 1 (rt1) was mentioned as being in use at an MSU help
desk, but lacked many potentially useful features. Rt3 was also used by
some in attendance, but they disliked its large number of required Perl
modules and insufficient performance. An alternative request tracker
that was brought up was OTRS, but nobody had used it.

There was pizza.

LPI Certification Training
by GLLUG Members
Want to learn about Linux but aren't sure where to start? Or would you
like to bone up on your Linux mastery so you can ace the Linux
Professional Institute certification exam? The GLLUG LPI certification
training sessions may be the answer. While we don't provide the exam
itself, we do present material straight out of IBM's DeveloperWorks LPI
study guides so you will have all of the knowledge you'll need to run
your own Linux machines in confidence and maybe even pass the LPI exam
if you choose to take it. We'll have experienced LUG members there to
teach the material and answer your questions in way too much detail and
to top it off, these sessions are FREE.
