[GLLUG] Custom Prompt in FC3

I have been trying to set a custom prompt in Fedora Core 3 running gnome and 
the default terminal.  I tried editing the .bash_profile, .chsrc, and 
.tchsrc files to no avail.  Anyone know what file you are supposed to edit 
in the default terminal to create a custom prompt?  I am using the following 
commands: 

PATH=$PATH:$HOME/bin:./:. 

setenv PATH ${PATH}:. 

set prompt="<\! 'uname -n':'dirs'>" 

export PATH
export prompt
unset USERNAME 

Any ideas?
