Sounds like the filesystem(s) might be getting mounted read-only. Type
"mount" at the command line and see if the options for the partitions
(in parentheses at the end of the line) have an "ro" in them. If they
do, you might need to fsck the filesystem or scroll back through the
init script output to figure out why it decided to mount the partitions
read-only.
