I know of at least one person who buys DVDs and makes recompressed 
backups of each disc to his file server, where they can be accessed by a 
homebrew PVR. For most movies, the quality is only slightly degraded but 
the movies themselves are a bazillion times easier to handle and watch 
since the physical disc is no longer part of the equation. I plan on 
doing the same once I can afford an upgrade to my file server. I'm 
(perhaps naively) looking forward to the day that I can buy a 
DRM-unencumbered high-quality movie online and remove the whole physical 
handling steps altogether. I don't necessarily agree with piracy either, 
just wanted to point out that there are perfectly legitimate reasons for 
wanting to back up a DVD, even if the MPAA would like to posit otherwise.
