I know of at least one person who buys DVDs and makes recompressed
backups of each disc to his file server, where they can be accessed by a
homebrew PVR. For most movies, the quality is only slightly degraded but
the movies themselves are a bazillion times easier to handle and watch
since the physical disc is no longer part of the equation. I plan on
doing the same once I can afford an upgrade to my file server. I'm
(perhaps naively) looking forward to the day that I can buy a
DRM-unencumbered high-quality movie online and remove the whole physical
handling steps altogether. I don't necessarily agree with piracy either,
just wanted to point out that there are perfectly legitimate reasons for
wanting to back up a DVD, even if the MPAA would like to posit otherwise.
