As Charles mentioned, there is TrueCrypt. Unlike when I gave my
presentation on Linux encryption, the web site now says you can create
container files from Linux.
Some other cross-platform encryption programs are GnuPG
(http://www.gnupg.org/), FreeOTFE (http://www.freeotfe.org), and
BestCrypt (http://www.jetico.com/index.htm#/bcrypt7.htm). However,
BestCrypt has a licensing fee for MS OSs.
No matter what you use to encrypt data on your USB key, Benjamin, you'll
need to do some research and studying. However, once set up, it can be
practically transparent. Just make sure that, if you cannot afford to
lose access to the data on that USB key, you have it backed up somewhere
else. If you're just shuttling files between PCs, that's not a problem.
